3 Things You Need To Know About Running A Business As A Mum

Running a business is a huge project, and when you’re a mum to young children, the idea of doing both simultaneously might make your head spin. Business owners are typically pictured as suited up men, pointing their fingers and making deals at all hours of the night. The reality, though, is that running a business is whatever you make it.

In this post, you’ll find out three things you should know about running a business as a mum. Let’s get started!

You are in the driver’s seat.

When you run a business as a mum, you are in the driver’s seat. You can design your business to work around your schedule as a mum, rather than letting traditional business models dictate how you parent your child. You don’t need to keep a 9-5; you don’t need to drop everything for work; you can find a routine that works for you as a mum.

Of course, being in the driver’s seat comes with responsibility as well as control. Your business might grow at a slower rate compared to other more efficient models; but that’s the beauty of being a mum – you can’t always control how your life goes! Keep your foot on the gas pedal and you are sure to find business success, your way.

You are bound to feel guilty sometimes.

Guilt is, unfortunately, part and parcel of being a mum. No matter what we do, we can sometimes feel like it’s not enough for our little ones who deserve the world. Even if you stayed home 24/7 and did nothing but look after your kids, you’d probably still feel guilty sometimes!

As a business owner and a mum, you are bound to feel the guilt creep in. Working late nights or missing school events because the business has taken priority can make you feel like you’re the worst mum in the world. Just know, you aren’t – even if you feel it sometimes – you are working this hard to provide for your kids in the future. They just don’t know it yet.

You might not get a day off for some time.

Days off? What are those? As a mum, you’ll know already that taking a “day off” is basically impossible; you might get the occasional getaway with your spouse or your friends, but for the most part, being a mother is a full time job.

Being a mother and a business owner is not just a full time job, it’s an entire lifestyle. No matter how supportive your loved ones are, there won’t be a day that goes by without your mom responsibilities or business responsibilities taking your attention up! It’s just the way it goes – so be prepared to work hard, mama!

Final thoughts…

If you love being an entrepreneur and want to juggle motherhood with running your own business, use our advice to help you achieve this delicate balance. The late nights applying for instant business loans and the early mornings on the phone to suppliers will all be worth it when you see how proud you make your family.
