A Week With Us 8th October-14th October 2018

Welcome to A Week With Us….A weekly update and insight to a week in the lives of our family of 7.

This week has been a week of playing advocate for my boys.

Honestly, there is so much judgement and misunderstanding around children with neurological disorders.

Harvey, my 13 year old son has sensory processing disorder amongst other things going on. He has a one plan at school, which I went in to school the other week to tweak it as Harvey has been struggling.

He has been getting a lot of ‘red clicks’ which are negative points, for fidgeting and not listening.

One thing Harvey has to do is move. He has to move to make his brain work. I like to describe it as the cogs in a clock, if his hands are moving, so is his brain.

Now you can imagine him sitting there doodling, fidgeting etc, but the teachers are under educated and saw this as disruptive behaviour. Harvey was coming home in moods, staying out of everyones way. Not my usual happy cheeky chappy! He told me he was always in trouble. Which I have had phone calls home for.

A Week With Us 8th October-14th October

I always ask Harvey what has happened, and give him his due he does tell me as it is. But obviously there are two sides to every story.

I won’t bore you will all the details, so long story short…as I am going to write a detailed post on this….

But it ended up that his behaviours in class were all linked to his sensory issues and the teachers were disciplining him. Well , I wasn’t having that!

Thankfully Harveys head of year specialises in pastoral care and has spoken to Harveys teachers and given them information on sensory issues!

Since we have seen a dramatic change in Harveys behaviour scores and his self esteem!

Caelan had an appointment with our GP, due to the fact the dietician recommended that he is referred to CAMHS due to his low weight, signs of anxiety and sensory issues. It’s the last thing I wanted, to send another child into ‘that’ system, but if we find an underlying problem and we can get Caelan eating properly, I will do it!

Cameron has had a tough week at school. He is feeling the pressure of Year 11. He puts so much pressure on himself as he is ‘expected’ to do well. Not by me, I’ve told him that he will do as well as he will do. That as long as he tries his best, i’m than happy with that. But the school are ‘pushing’ him as he is on their ‘Gifted and Talented’ programme. Which I think is all wrong, so you guessed it, another phone call to the school was made.

Cohen, well he is who he is. A fun loving 3 year old. Always smiling, constantly asking for his big sister to come and visit and giving cuddles. Mind you, we have had some paddies from him this week. Nothing out of the ordinary for a 3 year old.

This week was also Mckenzie’s Birthday, my little 10/10/10 baby! Is now 8! Where do the years go?! Mckenzie chose not to do anything for his birthday. He just wanted a cake, money for Roblox and a builders club membership for Robox. I have to say, it upsets me that he doesn’t really ‘get it’. He didn’t was a fuss, a party, lots of gifts. But, you know what? He was the happiest child ever that day!

Mckenzie crashed over the weekend. I think the week was too much for him. So on Saturday he had a quiet day, chilling out. But on Sunday, I told him that he was coming shopping with me. I have to teach him that, even though he is having a bad day, he still had to try and make an effort.

Family time

On Saturday Matthew and I took Caelan and Cohen to see Small Foot at the cinema. It is such a great movie, with a powerful message at the end!

Mummy Daddy Date Night

Oh, and Matthew and I had a long awaited Date night! We had VIP tickets to the launch of Scream Factory! Oh my! It was amazing! Definitely not for the faint hearted! It messed with your senses.  From complete darkness to strobe lights in a black and white stripped room with a tilted floor! As well as amazing actors and a spinning room! It was very well thought out! We also met the cast of Geordie Shore. I can honestly say that i’ve not laughed so much in a long time! It was just what we needed as a couple. To get out and have some child free time together.

Let’s see what next week brings…

Fab that you had some time just as a couple! I hope Mckenzie had a good low key birthday that suited him (my eldest is 8). Thanks for linking up with #globalblogging (and please add our badge when you get a chance!)
