But what is mindfulness?
Essentially, it is the act of focusing more on the present moment, in terms of both our internal thoughts and in the world around us. Many of us struggle with anxiety; we dwell on the past and worry about things that are out of our control. Becoming more mindful can help distract us from these negative thoughts and appreciate what we have here and now. Try and encourage your child to recognise all of the amazing experiences that they are faced with. This doesn’t have to be anything extravagant, like a trip to Disneyland, it could actually be as simple as eating a delicious snack or embracing a loved one. Explain to your child that these moments flash by in the blink of an eye so it’s important to enjoy them whilst they’re happening.
Talk to your child about their senses; what can they see, hear or smell? The idea is to encourage your child to tune into what’s going on around them and how certain things make them feel. Try and find time on a regular basis to have a one-to-one chat with your youngster in which you can discuss their emotions. Are they nervous about a test in school and if so, are there any physical side-effects? For instance, do they feel nauseous or have sweaty palms? By understanding how certain experiences can affect your child, both mentally and physically, will help them learn what to repeat or avoid in the future.
