I Don’t Have Time For That

Last Friday was International Day at one of the schools two of my sons go to. For this International Day, each year group was given a country to dress up as. My boys were given Italy and France.

Now, here’s my situation. I’m a mum to 5 boys. I run 2 businesses and work well over the 40 hours that is classed as full time. What time I have spare is spent with my family or on self care to enable I don’t burn out.

So it came to Thursday evening and I hadn’t made a costume for my boys to wear….

I Don’t Have Time For That!!!

In the end my boys settled with wearing clothes the same colours as their countries flag.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am all for my children taking part in these ‘special’ days and celebrations, but I really don’t think the schools take into consideration what it actually entails to have a family life. Not all parents have the time, or the money to do as the school has asked!

I asked some other Mums

What are your ‘I don’t you have time for that!’ moments

Gemma from Mummys Waisted said ‘Fit for Life’ week at school (my son is in Reception), they are supposed to wear sports clothes every day, and carry out a sponsored ‘eat your fruit and veg’ challenge…..NO. That, and World Book Day at my daughter’s nursery (she’s 2)’

Jess at Tantrums To Smiles  says ‘I don’t have time to bake for the school summer fayre! A quick run to Tesco on the morning of is just the same right…?’

dont have time for that

Helen at Welsh Mum Writing told me ‘My son is two and already I’ve had requests for things at short notice like bake something to bring in from his nursery. I explain that on my working days I work for 10 hours, I don’t have time. You just get the “but if you could….” Supermarket job all the way. If it comes to crafts I make them. I don’t have time in a weekday evening to spend 3 hours making something which would take me 10 minutes to do on my own. As I do loads of activities with them on my own timetable. I don’t need more rammed in there!’

Raimonda at Cosmo Mum says ‘I don’t have time to make or willingness to spend money on spotty or other weird and wonderful clothes for Children in Need week!’

Becky at Mommy and Rory said  There’s so much I don’t have time for, home cooked meals is a big one for us! Little Dish meals feature on the menu at least a few times a week!!

Rebecca at My Girls and Me told me ‘I dont have time to go on school trips with the kids. As much as i would love to, its hard for a baby sitter for the youngest!’

Jemma at Jemmalone.com said ‘My son was going on a school trip and they wanted him to come dressed in a World War II style uniform. They said we shouldn’t run out and spend money on one and should have fun making one at home
I felt so bad that I didn’t have the time or money, but we managed to pull one together in the end.’

Can you relate to these?!

Janet at Falcondale Life says ‘I never had time for sunflower growing competitions. I hate the fact I can’t keep the simplest plant alive, let alone remember to get my child to water hers and pot it up. Failed at the first hurdle there!’

dont have time for that

Alex at Better Together Home said ‘No time for the hundreds of times a year my daughters school request a £1 or £2 donation so that she can wear pyjamas/ all yellow/ any kind of costume to school! No time for all the sponsorship forms- nope I am not going to sponsor my daughter to learn her times tables or skip in the playground! Certainly, No time for pushy PTA mums who make you feel guilty for not signing up to run fetes or bake cakes etc! No time for unorganised schools that give you a day’s notice about your child’s class assembly and make you feel like the World’s worst parent as you won’t be able to get the time off. And above all no time for the constant working mum shaming I get ALL the time!’

Sarah at Mummy Cat Notes told me ‘I don’t have time for theme days where they have to dress in a costume, most costumes are £20 a go and I have two at the school so that’s £40 plus the £1 for the day itself, if they can go in non uniform I’m happy.’

Mandi at Big Family Organised Chaos Elaborate homework! Yes the children do their homework, but I don’t have time to make an entire village out of paper mache or carve a totem pole! I’m far too busy to engage in playground politics!!

Emily at A Slummy Mummy said ‘I have an entire Pinterest board entitled ‘really? Who has time for this sh**’
Sandwiches in any shape other than a square or triangle
Ironing bedsheets
Elf on the *bleep shelf (I wish I’d never started that one

dont have time for that

Leigh at Dad Geek says always moan at Halloween because of all the costume requirements. Who’s got that much time, especially when the neighbourhood is swamped with £40 Elsa costumes anyway. I go into full grump mode and tell stories about how I used to go out wearing a bin bag and a 20p paper mask.’

Victoria at Lylia Rose told me ‘I don’t have time to be a part of the school PTA or playgroup committee. I even once received a personal letter from the headteacher trying to get me to join. Promising myself, I won’t feel guilty though as I am just too busy and can’t even keep on top of my own business and life’s chores!’

I would love to hear about your ‘I Don’t Have Time For That’ stories. Leave me a comment below.

I stupidly let a fairy move into out house, who knew they took so much time up. I have no time for that! #bloggersbest

It’s been said a few times but it’s definitely the costumes for me too – as it is I try to fill our time together with fun, educational art and craft – I certainly dont have spare capacity (or skill) to create fancy costumes for every different last minute event.

While I don’t have a story to share, this has prepared me for the future when my toddler gets older. Also there is nothing wrong with a morning trip to the supermarket because you didn’t have time to bake #dreamteam

God yes. Since my eldest started school I find I either feel so guilty about all the stuff I can’t do or am frantically trying to do it. I won’t join the PTA but I try to help out. But remembering everything is so hard!! Thanks for sharing with #bloggersbest x

Oh, all of the above!! I feel like I’m always against the clock these days. The thing is, I’m just relieved I’m not alone, and clearly, I’m not! Thanks for sharing with #TriumphantTales.

Hehe! So many of these!!! But especially the dress up days. It is fun for the little ones, but the trouble is when it’s all last minute. Giving a weeks notice for yet another costume day doesn’t give us time to make or buy anything easily – unless I can get it off Amazon with next day delivery. I don’t think schools are geared up towards full time working parents. Thanks for joining us for the #dreamteam 🙂 wearing clothes in colour of the countries flags is a brilliant idea that I shall remember!
