Learning Resources Design & Drill® My First Workbench Review

Learning Resources Design & Drill® My First Workbench

We are a massive fan of Learning Resources products here. So, when we were asked to review Learning Resources Design & Drill® My First Workbench we jumped at the chance.

As a mum and childminder, I am always on the look out for toys and activities that don’t involve screen time and that are hands on and encourage practical learning.

First Impressions

The Learning Resources Design & Drill® My First Workbench comes with

  • storage drawer
  • electric bolt driver,
  • hammer
  • 60 bolts
  • 60 nails
  • instruction guide (includes 10 patterns)

The Learning Resources Design & Drill® My First Workbench itself is very robust and made from, what I call ‘tough plastic’.

It looks  like it can take a good ‘bashing’ without getting damaged. The tools are light weight and just the right size for little hands.

The draw runs smoothly and compactly fits in all 120 bolts and nails. There are 2 holes on the workbench to store the hammer and electric bolt driver. Perfect for keeping everything together. Plus the colours are bright and attractive.

Watching My Boys Play With Learning Resources Design & Drill® My First Workbench

I set up the Learning Resources Design & Drill® My First Workbench up on a table for my boys to explore.

Cohen (3) was the first one to go to Learning Resources Design & Drill® My First Workbench. He picked up the hammer and inspected the bolts and nails. He started to hammer in the bolts into the boards. He said ‘Mummy, I am working like my Grandad!’. He seemed very proud of this as he is always helping his Grandad do odd jobs!

Mckenzie (7) tool of choice was the drill. After pressing the button a few times and tampering with the bolts, he worked out that he had to flick a tiny switch on the side to change the direction of the drill to screw the bolts in and out. I showed Mckenzie the colourful patterns in the user manual to copy and create. But he preferred to create his own.

Caelan (6) joined in. It was great to see that Caelan and Cohen made a role play game together. Giving each other instructions and taking on a role within their play. They showed skills such as sharing, listening to instructions and following through on the instructions. Great cooperation skills!

I have to say, Learning Resources Design & Drill® My First Workbench impressed me as my boys engaged really well with it. They spent at least a good 2 hours creating play involving the Learning Resources Design & Drill® My First Workbench. Which is pretty amazing considering it doesn’t include screen time or any characters of their interest.

They have since been getting this out as their choice of toy to play with, without any prompting or encouragement!

The Final Verdict

As a Mum, I was really impressed how well the Learning Resources Design & Drill® My First Workbench let up with all the banging from the hammer. It is as robust as it looks! It is made to a really high quality, which is needed with such a hands on toy!

I loved how Learning Resources Design & Drill® My First Workbench engaged my boys and the fact they could relate their real life experiences and show an interest when playing.

This looks great for developing hand eye coordination and motor skills. I love that there is enough for more than one child to play at once to it can be social as well. Thanks for lining up with #stayclassymama
