The Importance of Drama Lessons in Schools

fashion man love people

Drama lessons are an incredibly important part of the school curriculum. This is because drama supports many academic skills, as well as many personal skills. Drama can help to build confidence, improve communication and boost creativity.

I have teamed up with an independent girl’s school in London to explore more of the benefits that drama lessons have to offer…

Confidence Building

Drama lessons are an ideal way to build a child’s confidence. Speaking clearly and confidently doesn’t come naturally to all children. However, these skills can be learnt and practiced through drama. Drama lessons often require children to perform in front of their classmates; which is a really great way to build confidence. It gives students an opportunity to step out of their comfort zone in a safe and structured environment.

Encourages Teamwork

Drama lessons encourage teamwork within a class. The ability to work as part of a team is a vital skill for children to learn, because it helps them to form friendships and put differences aside in order to reach a goal. Furthermore, in drama students will experience different opinions and perspectives, as well as receive feedback and advice.

Improves Literacy skills

During drama lessons, children will often use a script to learn the lines of a performance. Not only will this help to improve your child’s reading skills, but it will also introduce them to different ways of using language, extend their vocabulary and improve pronunciation. Script reading and writing exercises will also help to enhance your child’s spelling and punctuation.

Behind the scenes

For children who do not feel comfortable in the spotlight, there are other important tasks they can take part in behind the scenes. For instance, they could help to make costumes or get involved in set design. School shows also provide an opportunity for students to help with lighting and sound. Furthermore, children will learn about famous plays and movies and may even get into scriptwriting.
