With rates of anxiety, depression and stress-related illnesses continually rising, it seems we’re overlooking one crucial factor in our lives – ourselves. Modern day life can be stressful and all too often it seems like there just aren’t enough hours in the day to get everything done. As constant stress begins to build, it can have a negative effect on both your mental and physical health.

Fortunately, there are ways to alleviate this. Once you’ve recognised potentially unhealthy or unhelpful patterns, you can make changes to prevent them from taking a toll on your mental health. Taking care of yourself and treating yourself from time to time has been shown to improve mental health, so why not take a look at our top tips below and treat yourself today?

Take a break

Whether you’re rushing home from work to cater for your family, ferrying your children from one activity to another or struggling with school deadlines, the chances are you’re juggling too much at once. Taking a break can actually increase your overall productivity and it can certainly reduce stress levels. Whilst a long-haul, luxury holiday might be out of the question, a movie night or even scheduled study breaks can make all the difference to your mental health.

Practice Self-Care

When the list of must-do tasks is never-ending, taking care of yourself can become your last priority. Take time to recognise your worth and validate your efforts to ensure you are practising self-care regularly. Treating yourself is a way of recognising and validating your choices, whether it’s an affordable purchase, some time in the sun, a couple of cookies or a long soak in the bath.

Reward yourself

Positive reinforcement is an effective way of incentivising yourself and if it works for dogs, it’s good enough for us! Just like training a puppy, when you reward good behaviour, you’re more inclined to behave in that way again. Either reward yourself with something small every time you tick something off of your to-do list or save your treats up for a bigger reward when you’ve accomplished something in particular like a big project at work. You could search here for a personalised number plate, book a fabulous summer holiday or even just treat yourself to a nice bar of chocolate. It doesn’t matter what the reward is as long as you do something!

Be compassionate

We often like to think of ourselves as compassionate and empathetic but we tend to reserve these considerations for other people. Instead of dwelling on what you perceive as your shortcoming or failures, practice self-compassion instead. No-one is perfect and we all fail on occasion, so there’s no need to be hard on yourself when things don’t go as well as you’d like. Instead, recognise your efforts, your intentions and learn from the outcome so that you’re better prepared next time.

Nurture yourself

Using treats to reward yourself and validate your worth can be a healthy and productive way to improve your mental health, providing you select nurturing rewards. Overindulgence and excess can lead to problems of their own so choose treats and rewards which will benefit you in the long-term. Keep yourself motivated by promising yourself a coveted item when you’ve achieved something big and treat yourself to small, affordable luxuries as treats in the meantime.

Good mental health is so important but it’s often something which is overlooked. Taking the time to recognise our own strengths and reward ourselves for them is a great way of reinforcing positive behaviour and it can also prevent negative thinking. As a result, treating yourself can become an effective way of warding off stress, anxiety and bouts of negativity. For people with depression, practising self-care and self-compassion can even help to alleviate symptoms and prevent a recurrence of the condition.

Taking your foot off the pedal and enjoying a slower pace of life is a great way to ease the stresses of your mind, and it can have long-lasting effects too. As well as providing you with relaxation and contentment in the moment, treating yourself can foster long-term benefits which will recalibrate the way you look at life and yourself.

So how will you treat yourself? For the perfect reward or the ideal incentive, set your sights on a unique personalised number plate. You can put yourself a step ahead with a distinct 2, 3 or 4 number plate, opt for a dateless plate if you’re after a timeless classic or go all out with a premium personalised number plate.

My dad has been thinking about building up his mental health because he has had a hard time lately and he wants to make sure that he can get some help if he needs it. Talking to a professional could be really useful and allow him to be more productive and live a better life so that he is more resistant. I’ll be sure to tell him about how he should make sure to reward himself when he does good things and be kind to himself.
