Understanding Various Teaching Models for Your Child’s Education

It’s safe to say that as parents, we all want our children to have the best education possible. This is often why we all put a lot of time, care and attention into making the best decisions around their education and where they go to school. But alongside that, one more thing you might want to think about is the teaching model used. Yet, with so many teaching models to choose from, it’s immportant to understand which will be better for your child. In this blog post, we’ll run through various teaching models to help you understand which one might be best for your child.

Traditional Teaching Model

The traditional teaching model is the most common teaching model used in schools. It involves a teacher teaching to a group of students who sit and listen. This type of teaching model aims to provide a structured and organized approach to education, where students learn through textbooks, homework, and quizzes. It values conformity and memorization, which can benefit some students who thrive in a structured environment.

Montessori Teaching Model

Next up, the Montessori teaching model was developed by Maria Montessori and is an alternative approach to education. It seeks to develop independence and self-motivation in children by allowing them to learn at their own pace. Montessori classrooms are filled with sensory-based activities and materials that allow children to explore and learn on their own. Here, you’ll find that creativity, independence, and problem-solving is valued the most, which can be a great fit for children who prefer hands-on and experiential learning.

Waldorf Teaching Model

The Waldorf Teaching model was developed by Rudolf Steiner and is based on the philosophy that education should be holistic. It has the aim of developing the child’s spiritual, mental, and physical well-being in one go. You’ll often find that this teaching model emphasizes the arts, imagination, and creative play above all else. Waldorf classrooms focus heavily on storytelling, music, and art, and prepares children for a lifetime of learning by connecting them to nature, arts, and literature.

Explicit Teaching Model

The Explicit Teaching Model is an instructional approach to teaching. This model focuses on breaking down big concepts into smaller parts so that students are better able to comprehend, remember, and use the material. You’ll find that explicit teaching works with the idea of warming up before demonstrating a task, doing it together, then allowing the children to try it on their own. With this model, teachers actively engage their students with plenty of opportunities for practice and discussion.

Project-Based Learning

Project-based learning is an innovative teaching model where teachers facilitate learning by creating projects that focus on real-world problems. Students work in groups or teams to solve problems by brainstorming, researching, and working together. This teaching model values critical thinking, communication, and teamwork, and teaches students to apply their knowledge and solve real-world problems.

Online Learning

And finally, we also have the option of online learning to consider. This is becoming increasingly popular as an alternative to traditional classroom-based learning. Online learning can provide students with flexible schedules, self-paced learning, and personalized instruction. It uses digital platforms like video conferencing, webinars, and online learning management systems where students can access recorded lectures and materials at their convenience.
