Breastfeeding mums of the world, unite!
Although breastfeeding is already such a big movement around the world, it is still important for breastfeeding mums to show support for each other. This is not only because opposition remains out there, but also because of the fact that this motherhood responsibility (as wonderful as it is) just naturally comes with a lot of challenges.
When there is a strong community sharing information on how to make breastfeeding more convenient and manageable (such as where to get the best post-pregnancy pants or the best blogs to find advice on breastfeeding), mums – even with their postpartum hormones – will feel more confident with accomplishing the task.
If you are a breastfeeding mum and you long to be a part of the empowering movement, here are seven ways you can show your support for breastfeeding mums.
1. Offer words of encouragement.
Every new mum (or every mum who has just given birth to another child) can benefit greatly from hearing kind words. Telling them that they are doing a beautiful job and that it is admirable that they have decided to be their little one’s main source of sustenance is going to be a huge confidence boost.
New mums can feel quite vulnerable and breastfeeding can actually aggravate that (along with sleep deprivation, because the baby wants to be fed frequently). Praise her for being super and you just might make her day.
2. Exchange stories with each other.
A lot of breastfeeding mums have a tendency to feel isolated from everyone else. Therefore, they appreciate it immensely when they find other women going through life changes similar to their own.
You can share your breastfeeding concerns and the solutions you have found to be most effective. This will help other mums increase all of their knowledge banks so they can continue to confidently move forward in their motherhood journey.
3. Avoid one-ups.
When a breastfeeding mum is struggling, do not try to make her feel better by telling a story that sort of subtracts from what she is going through. Statements like, “You think that hurts? Mine was way worse…”
If you can’t think of anything really helpful to say, just smile and give a nod of encouragement.
4.“What can I do to help?”
If everything is just fine on your end, then one of the best things you can do is to offer your help to a mum who’s having a difficult time. This phrasing is better because you’re basically telling the other mum that your help is hers and all she needs to do, is tell you what kind of help she needs.
This simple gesture can mean so much, especially if she is alone and having a hard time regaining control of a situation.
5. Breastfeed together.
This is very important, especially if you are out in public and you can sense self-consciousness about breastfeeding. You can automatically ease the discomfort that another mum is feeling by joining her in nursing your babies together. She will also feel less intimidated by the possibility of people casting judging looks toward your direction.
6. Recommend great products to use.
Since you are going through similar changes in your life, you can help each other out by recommending products that can make breastfeeding, as well as other motherhood and life duties, so much easier.
If something is working for you and making your life easier, then perhaps it can work for other moms as well.
For example, you have found a great store that carries stylish nursing dresses for weddings. You can recommend those dresses to a breastfeeding mum who is going to attend one. Finding comfortable clothing that also looks great is always an issue for breastfeeding mums, so she will certainly be grateful for the solution you are sharing with her.
7. Contribute your personal experience to relevant platforms.
There are many platforms that welcome contributions from breastfeeding mums – stories, reviews of nursing products, recommendations, and many others. If you are shy about reaching out to the other breastfeeding mums you meet, you can share your knowledge through these platforms.
Mothers scan these platforms to increase their understanding, and you, sharing your unique experiences, can actually help them.
Breastfeeding mums can use all the support they need, and receiving that from other mums who are going through similar challenges they are experiencing is meaningful. Share yourself with them and help grow the movement that will encourage more women to breastfeed.
